Quick food checklist

Is it vegan? A practical checklist

Start with the obvious animal ingredients, use the label as evidence, then investigate anything ambiguous.

1. Look for a clear vegan statement

A recognized vegan certification or a current manufacturer statement can simplify the check. Still confirm that you are looking at the same product, recipe, size, and country because formulas vary.

2. Read the full ingredient list

Watch for meat, fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs, honey, gelatin, and other explicitly animal-derived ingredients. Do not assume “vegetarian” means vegan; vegetarian foods may contain milk, egg, or honey.

3. Use the allergen statement as a shortcut—not the whole answer

In the US, milk, egg, fish, and crustacean shellfish are among the major allergens that must be identified when used as ingredients. The FDA describes how these sources appear in ingredient lists or “Contains” statements. Honey, gelatin, carmine, and many other non-vegan ingredients are not covered by that shortcut.

4. Investigate unclear additives and flavors

Some additives can come from plant, animal, or synthetic sources. Natural flavor and processing details may require a company answer. Decide how you personally handle uncertainty and shared equipment; vegans can draw practical boundaries differently.

5. Ask about prepared food

For restaurant meals, ask about broth, frying fat, butter, cheese, egg wash, sauces, dressings, and shared cooking surfaces. “Plant-based” menu language may describe the main ingredient without resolving every preparation detail.
